BYETTA comparison study with insulin lispro (mealtime insulin)

A 30-week trial compared the addition of BYETTA twice daily with insulin lispro (mealtime insulin) three times daily in adult patients with type 2 diabetes uncontrolled on a background of basal (long-acting) insulin glargine and metformin.

  • BYETTA reduced A1C by -1.13% (starting 8.3%) compared to -1.10% (starting at 8.2%) for insulin lispro.

In addition to measuring A1C, weight changes were also measured at 30 weeks

  • There was a 10-pound weight difference between BYETTA compared to insulin lispro
  • Treatment with BYETTA resulted in an average 5.5-pound reduction in body weight* starting at 200.4 pounds
  • Treatment with insulin lispro resulted in an average 4.6-pound increase in body weight starting at 196.7 pounds

Occurrence of Minor Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) Over 30 Weeks

BYETTA showed a 30% occurrence of low blood sugar compared to insulin lispro over 30 weeks

Minor hypoglycemia was any patient-reported sign or symptom of hypoglycemia and a blood glucose of less than 54 mg/dL that was either self treated or resolved on its own.

It's important to know, your risk for getting low blood sugar is higher if you take BYETTA with another medicine that can cause low blood sugar, such as a sulfonylurea or insulin. The dose of your sulfonylurea or insulin medicine may need to be lowered while you use BYETTA.

Signs and symptoms of low blood sugar may include:

  • headache
  • drowsiness
  • weakness
  • dizziness
  • confusion
  • irritability
  • hunger
  • fast heartbeat
  • sweating
  • feeling jittery

Common Side Effects Over 30 Weeks

In the study, patients taking BYETTA had higher rates of the following side effects compared to insulin lispro: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, indigestion, nasopharyngitis, bronchitis, influenza, and headache.
